At least until Kira returns in another form (my theory is that the guy who released two new photos in the end wasn't Kira, just someone who had a more complete collection than the average Joe. Kira will only strike back when he's broke.) Anyhow, here is the picture of Edison Chen being escorted by a myriad of policemen holding each other's hands (see inserted picture.) Here is a transcript of his press conference:
"I would like to say sorry for all the people in Hong Kong. I give my apology sincerely to you all with my heart ... I am deeply sorry for everything that has happened ... I feel deeply sorry for the impact and influence that [this] event has brought to society and the public. In the future, I will continue working hard and take my life positively ... These photos were very private and are not intended to show to people. These photos were stolen illegally and have [been] distributed without my consent. And these photos had been circulated on the internet maliciously ... I would like to apologise to all the ladies and their families, my family, and to everyone in Hong KongI would like to apologise to all the ladies and their families, my family, and to everyone in Hong Kong ... I know young people in Hong Kong look up to many figures in our society, and in this regard, I failed as a role model. However, I wish this matter will teach the young people in our society a lesson. Let this be a lesson to you all, this is not an example to be set for you ... During my time away, I’ve made an important decision. I will whole-heartedly fulfil all commitments that I have to take but after that, I’ve decided to step away from the Hong Kong entertainment industry... indefinitely... to heal myself and search my soul ... I hope all of you will accept my apology and give me a chance."
Touching, really. His retirement was of such shock to the Hong Kong community that the usually fast-paced average Hong Kong Joe stopped to tell reporters "I think he did the right thing." Perhaps it really was the right thing to do, but highly unexpected, especially from one of Hong Kong's most famous young artiste.
Two issues remain unresolved, though, even as this sex scandal is becoming more and more moot. Firstly, do Hong Kong Police really treat celebrities with celebrity status? "Yes" is the answer, apparently (just look at the photo above, would any normal person have so much protection?), and this disparity of treatment was rubbed in hard on average Joe, so hard that there are calls on denouncing the police in every type of media.
Secondly, to follow on the first point, why was Chung Yik-tin incarcerated for two weeks without bail on distributing a Class II Indecent photo without the police ever attempting to present the photo to the Obscene Articles Tribunal for classification? Does pseudo-nude pictures of celebrities automatically make the photo a Class III Obscene photo, whereas the same photo-posture of a normal citizen only gets a Class II Indecent? This whole incident really questions Hong Kong Police's motives.
Anyway, this should be the end of Edison Chen and his scandals. Or is it?
