Good News and Bad News

The good news is that the number of vehicles in China reached to 43 million cars in 2005. It is estimated that the next 15 years people will see a sharp increase in the number of cars to 100 million.

The bad news is that those cars will cause more severe pollution under the current low-level industry pollution control system.

A survey conducted by Shanxi Provincial Environmental Protection Bureau showed that 93.31 percent of the public said environmental protection and economic development are equally important.

However, the survey also showed that 91.95 percent of local officials believe stronger environmental protection will hamper economic development.
