Contrary to the popular fear that China represented a threat to American prosperity and leadership, U.S. Treasury secretary Henry Paulson says that a strong Chinese economy is in the strategic and economic interests of the United States. Paulson will travel to China next week, and he said he would send a simple message to the Chinese leaders: “We want you to succeed.” Here is Paulson’s speech.
I think it is too early to tell if Paulson’s speech actually distances himself from the existing Bush administration’s policy, but he is surely setting himself up for a clash with those who have been trying to criticize China as a threat to the U.S. superpower.
By the way, commentary in the blogosphere said that Paulson seems more like the “Secretary of U.S. – China relationship”, instead of Secretary of Treasury. I agree.
