U.S. Media and China’s Image

A delegation of U.S. journalists formed by USA Today, Foreign Policy Magazine, Wall Street Journal Asia, and other U.S media arrived in Beijing on Tuesday. The purpose of the visit was to try to achieve a deeper and more dynamic understanding of China, in order to make objective and unbiased reports about the nation’s real conditions and developments.

For a long period of time, China was generally a negative image in the U.S. media. If you read The New York Times, and followed the CNN Lou Dobbs Tonight show, you will find plenty of terrible stories about China. One after another, almost everything is wrong with China. Some media critics said this would teach the Chinese who’s the boss!

Who is the “boss”? Interesting question, isn’t it?

For those who honestly are trying to keep the true China in perspective -- not too rosy, not too cranky, it is, still, a mission impossible.

Great blog Yuan, I am glad that happened because recently I taught graduate level courses in Chonqing and was amazed that we hear so little about what it is really like in China. I loved the country and made many close friends with leaders there. Do you get back often? So good to have this blog at KMM!

Dr Weber,

I am very glad to know that you taught graduates in China. Do you enjoy Chongqing's spicy food?

I visit China often, but not as often as I visit your blog. Your posts are very informative. I learn a lot.

Yuan, you are so kind! And thanks - I am so glad you are here at KMM - and glad you like my blog because it is fun to write about the brain.

"Spicy --" you say??? No way Yuan-- "spicy" is not a strong enough term for the food where we were:-)

Seriously, I drowned the spices in rice at times -- but I loved my 6 weeks there ... and I learned so much, and made wonderful friends! I plan to go back ... but am also working in Ireland at the moment. Where do you visit mostly? I hope you like KMM as much as I do. Best!

Dr. Weber,

Thanks for the encouragement.

Chongqing spicy food is indeed, quite a challenge for outsiders including me. But, you survived, that is good enough.

I usually spent most of the time with my parents in Shanghai when I go back to China.

Take care.
