Susan Schwab, the U.S. trade representative, tried to press China to be more vocal than India and Brazil. “It is my strong hope that China will carry out a clear-eye assessment of the costs and benefits of a successful Doha round and conclude that it is in China’s long-term self-interest to play an active role in ensuring the round is open and successful.” Susan Schwab told U.S. business leaders in Beijing last week.
Meanwhile, several bills have been introduced in the U.S. Congress calling for increased tariffs and other protective measures against Chinese goods imported to the U.S. markets. Schwab said these reflected America’s concern about China’s fast rise in the world trade system.
It is a pretty good one-two punch.
