Anson Chan, the most influential democracy activist in Hong Kong, announced last Saturday that she would not run for chief executive this winter. She criticized Beijing setting the rules for the selection of chief executives in this semiautonomous region. “The present rules of the game really discourage eligible people from running,” she said.
The trick is, Mrs. Chan, who had once been Hong Kong’s second highest-ranking official, admitted that she had tried and failed to find even one of the Hong Kong’s influential business leaders who might have been willing to join her to promote democracy here.
Without business community's support, what can a politician do?

I just want to enter into discussion with Mrs. Anson Chan, who a couple of days ago, delivered her speech on lack of political leadership in Hong Kong by email. My name is: Dr. Sum-Wah Lam. My email address is: drswlam@gmail.com. Her uncle, Dr. Harry Fang, was a good friend of my UK education sponsor. Her name is: Dr. Elizabeth Franklin Moore of the Sino-British Fellowship Trust. Let me have a chance to enter into correspondence with Anson on different matters in the territory.
