You probably already know that more and more Arctic sea ice is melting in the summer. Now, scientist found that the ice was shrinking not only in the summer, but in the winter as well.
For more than 25 years, Arctic sea ice has been slowly diminishing in winter by 1.5 percent per decade. But in the past two years, the melting has occurred at rates 10 to 15 times faster. From 2004 to 2005, the amount of ice dropped 2.3 percent. Researchers are linking the change directly to global warming.
“It has never occurred before” said NASA senior research scientist Josefino Comiso. “If the winter ice melt continues, the effect would be very profound, especially for marine mammals.”
Just for marine mammals?
Last year, former Vice President Al Gore warned people that rising sea levels could drown out parts of Florida, Louisiana, and Manhattan!
