
United Nations defines an aging country as one whose senior citizens accounted for 7 percent or more of the total population. By this standard, China has already entered the ‘Global Seniority Club.’
Approximately 30 years ago, China started to implement the family planning policy. Although the policy has been widely criticized by outsiders, most Chinese families have just one child and have gradually accepted the fact that China cannot support a large population. By controlling the birth rates, China has certainly prevented an overpopulation crisis. But China’s policy-makers have now started to worry about how the country can care for up to a billion seniors.
