What do large multinationals have that Chinese companies do NOT have? Managers.
The largest private car maker in China, Geely Automobile, hired a former executive of South Korea's Daewoo to ready its cars for the international market.
According to a Geely official, there is a "shortage of engineers and R&D managers, so we'll need more overseas staff. Chinese engineers are lagging in experience and knowledge."
You can't turn out managers in school. There is no quick training course to be a leader and director. An MBA does not a manager make. The degree just means they went to school.
The result is, China must dip into the same talent pool that the multinationals dip into. And, the managers cost more! Good news for the worker?
The goal is to replace expatriates with locals...but locals are hard to come by as well and the ones who are qualified are expensive.
The simple truth is you just plain can't grow too fast...even an economy can't grow too fast. It reminds me of a kid who's body grows tall and stature but his mind is not mature enough to keep up.
Am I wrong here?
