I attended a recent Investment in China and India Summit hosted by Financial Research Associates I will use this forum to share some of the slide/insights that were given at this summit for the benefit of those hoping/thinking/planning on investing in an Asian country - China, India or Japan.
Reference Checks
Performing reference checks on portfolio company CEOs and others can be difficult because of differences in language, culture, and business norms
Getting frank and open responses can be more difficult across cultural divides Culture and Language
Even when dealing directly with the fund manager, complete understanding can be difficult because of differences in the nuances of language and business culture
What does “Hai” mean in Japanese?
Due Diligence requires on site visits in country to develop an understanding of both the local investment environment and the fund manager
The single most important, well almost, qualification of your fund manage is - has s/he been on the ground in the country that you want to invest in?
