I have been wrong before. Once I thought I was wrong when I was really right.
I am about to be wrong again.
why would anyone pay $95 million for an art piece?
I read once that there was a robbery in France but the French police were relieved that Picasso was an eye-witness to the fleeing robbers.
Based on his description, the police arrested a nun, a washing machine, a radio tower and a flower vase shaped like a french pastry.
But, people do spend ungodly sums for art.
Now art in China is becoming big business, too. Well, what isn't becoming big business in China?
China's new millionaires...stateside...are loading up on contemporary works by Chinese artists.
A Gu Wenda's 12ft by 4ft ink painting which sold for $35K a year and a half ago recently went for more than $150K. Now they have to figure out where to hang it.
Paris-based Yang Jie Chang has seen his paintings go from $30K to $100K. Did he study under a Picasso disciple perhaps?
There is a reason for this valuing up of Chinese art says one dealer in New York. As a matter of pride, the Chinese want to think paintings by their artists are high valued as well. So, they will exchange such paintings to drive the value up.
Uh...I don't think it has anything to do with pride. My experience with Chinese is that they will absolutely not pay any more for anything than they have to...even paintings.
I think there are just a few people who have too much money. As Gump said, after a certain amount, the rest of the money is just for show.
What do you think?
